AWS GameDay

About the activity

On your first day at the fictional unicorn rental company Unicorn.Rentals, your team takes over a website receiving a steady stream of traffic. Every successful rental earns points, while rankings balance traffic served, response latency, and compute cost. A larger instance is not automatically the best choice. In a live AWS environment, you will observe services, troubleshoot failures, and improve the architecture. Chaos Monkey-style disruptions may occur (like a clumsy teammate accidentally shutting down your service), so monitoring helps you detect trouble and keep the site online. National competitors will help you get hands-on with international skills competition Cloud Computing challenges and share how they prioritize problems and verify fixes under time pressure.

How scoring works

  1. Traffic served

    Successful unicorn rentals

  2. Response latency

    How quickly the site responds

  3. Compute cost

    Instance size and expense

What is a skills competition?

Skills competitions test practical ability through hands-on tasks. In Taiwan, competitors progress through regional and national competitions, then national competitor selection for a chance to represent Taiwan internationally. Cloud Computing is Skill 53. Its scope includes cloud services, network and system administration, application deployment (including databases), and system security. Competitors must turn requirements into an architecture, deploy services, troubleshoot failures, and balance reliability, security, and cost under time pressure. This GameDay lets you explore those cloud skills through a unicorn rental website scenario.

  • Design and build public cloud infrastructure

  • Deploy applications and operate services

  • Analyze problems and improve systems

The path to becoming a national competitor

Based on the selection rules for the 48th WorldSkills Competition. Eligibility and places may change by edition; check the current official notice.

  1. Regional competitions

In principle, the top five in each skill and region are recommended for the national competition; exceptions apply when entry numbers are low or regions are combined.

  2. National competition

Current results count toward stage one. Past top-three finishers may also enter national competitor selection if they meet age and other requirements.

  3. Selection · stage one

Held alongside the national competition. The top three advance to stage two, with three additional reserves.

  4. Selection · stage two

Stage-one and stage-two results count for 40% and 60% of the total; the highest-ranked competitor is selected, followed by a reserve.

Learning goals

  1. Work directly with AWS cloud resources and explore the compute, networking, and services behind a website.
  2. Use monitoring and traffic signals in an AWS environment to find performance bottlenecks and failures.
  3. Adjust cloud resources as demand changes and understand the tradeoffs among availability, performance, and cost.
  4. Troubleshoot sudden service outages and verify that the site is healthy again.
  5. Collaborate on hands-on cloud tasks and apply what you know to a realistic scenario.

Who should join and what to know

High school and university students, and community members interested in hands-on cloud operations or skills competitions, are welcome. Register solo or with a full team of four. Tell us your familiarity level when signing up; we will help match participants into balanced teams.

A basic understanding of web requests, cloud resources, and command-line tools is recommended. We will help you enter the environment, and you can ask the competitors questions throughout.
